A couple questions I have been asked throughout my placement are:
- Overall, how do you like working with the kids?
- Is it easier to motivate kids compared to adults?
- What ways have you found to motivate the children to keep moving?
Working with kids is a very enjoyable experience! It is not always the best experience though, some of the younger kids require a little bit more attention because they do not always understand what you are asking them to do. They can also be very shy so they want to go back to their parents instead of working with you, some children do not listen as well as others and will run off, this causes a slight chain reaction and the next thing you know your whole class is gone. It really is a task to keep some of them paying attention.
To motivate the kids I like to try and use as much imagination as possible, sometimes even being silly helps the kids become more interested. For some of the activities the kids enjoy when you turn things into a competition for example to get the kids heart rate going I like to play "race the coach" this gets the kids motivated and warmed up before we start any activity. Now some kids are too shy to run fast, so we tell them their shoes are rocket shoes and they have to touch their toes to turn them on. The kids always become very excited to race the coach with their rocket shoes. To answer your question directly I believe motivating kids is easier than adults, there is a certain excitement you can use in your voice that gets the kids excited where with adults this tone of voice is not needed.
I hope I managed to answer all of the questions! And don't be afraid to keep them coming!
